Past Summer Service Fund Winners
Announcement of 2004 Winner
May 24 2004
The Princeton Class of 1995 is pleased to announce that Suneel Bhat '06 is the winner of the 2004 Summer Service Fund Award. Suneel will receive $1,000 to support his summer community service endeavor. Suneel brings to eleven the number of undergraduates who have received awards since the Fund began supporting students in the summer of 2000.
Sunneel will spend the summer in the village of Bangane in southern India. Bangane is a remote village with little or no access to modern medical or educational facilities. Many Bangane residents suffer from malnutrition, parasitic disease, and hygiene-related illness. Suneel will conduct a detailed health survey in the village, which will include free treatment from physicians from the nearest town. Suneel's health survey will be one of the first modern ethnographic/anthropological health studies of a southern Indian village. Additionally, Suneel plans to coordinate the construction of a permanent schoolhouse, in which the Vanvasi Kalyana, a tribal welfare organization, will conduct classes and childhood development programs. Suneel is a member of the Princeton Varsity Sprint Football team and is a staff editor of Innovations, a Princeton-based scientific magazine.
Suneel was selected from a number of strong applicants by the '95 Summer Service Fund's Selection Team: Dan Marcus (Selection Team Leader), Elyse Michaels Berger, Micah Burch, Kim Sladkin Digilio, Rahsaan Harris, Gwen Jones, Rebecca Muraview, Anne Pak, Shaifali Puri, Justine Sass, and Tom Seidenstein. The Class also recognizes the efforts of other Summer Service Fund Committee members: John Smith, Peter Belden, Matthew Draper, Rob Hill, Helen Hu, Christopher Looney, Jeremy Roller, Hannah Clayson Smith, Shannon Sullivan, and Lauren Sager Weinstein.
