Summer Service Fund Reports
Report from Belize by John Kimble '02
December 8 2001
Dear Class of '95 Summer Service Fund,
Thank you so much for helping fund this summer's Princeton in Belize program. Nine Princeton students from various classes and departments spent nine weeks living and working with the community of St. Margaret's, a village nestled in the Maya Mountains of central Belize. Your generosity enabled us to accomplish and experience quite a lot during this time.
- We organized and ran a four week long summer camp for village children ages 5-13. The camp combined traditional school curricula with community and environmental education, and closed in a camp wide production of "The Stonecutter," performed for the student's parents.
- We conducted one-on-one adult tutoring sessions continuously throughout the summer, working with adults on English, Spanish literacy, math, and the physical sciences.
- We did work on the school kitchen, including tiling the floor, securing the windows with steel bars, building a cement serving counter, and constructing a table to support a sink.
- We did a substantial amount of work in the Five Blues Lake National Park, including planning several trails, marking and clearing one of these trails, making signs, ladders, and a footbridge for the trail, assisting in the writing of several grant proposals, proposing a design for an observation tower, and constructing an educational display on the geology of the park's terrain.
As you can tell, we kept ourselves busy! Each one of us had an amazing experience living and working in St. Margaret's. We met some incredible people and learned so much. It was an experience I will never forget. Thanks again for supporting me. I could not have done any of it without you.
